About Teacher Chrissy
Hi, my name is Chrissy Thompson and I am the owner and head teacher of Storybook Cottage Preschool. I believe that social-emotional and relationship-based learning is vital in order to foster a child's development and future success in life. I truly enjoy taking part in a child’s preschool years as they make discoveries, engage with new friends, and test their ideas. It brings me so much joy to see the look of accomplishment on a child’s face when they do something they thought was impossible for the first time! My goal is to provide children with a safe and supportive environment where they have the freedom to learn according to their unique learning styles using meaningful interactions with fun and engaging hands-on exploration!
Qualifications
I have over 15 years of experience teaching in multiple preschool classrooms and child development centers. Most recently I worked as a co-op preschool teacher where I worked with children and families together to help parents connect with their children as they learned new ways to support their child's development and growth.
I have Bachelor's Degree in Human Development from Long Beach State University and a Master's Degree in Child Life Sciences from Azusa Pacific University. I have extensive training in Early Childhood Development and a Master Teacher of Early Childhood Certificate from Saddleback College.

Play-based, emergent curriculum encourages children to think, reason, question, and solve problems through purposefully planned learning centers.
Science, math, art, music, dramatic play, and language fundamentals are taught using a balance of child-directed and teacher-directed experiences.
Block Play
Block play is a great way for
children to learn critical thinking and emotional regulation. "What do I do if my tower falls down?" Helping children navigate tough situations encourages independence and confidence.
Science Exploration
Young children are natural scientists who are eager to explore their environment. Science exploration creates opportunities for inquisitive minds to test their hypothesis and experiment with new ideas.
Dramatic Play
Dramatic or "Pretend" play is crucial to the healthy development of a young child.
Dramatic play helps children learn self-regulation, emotional expression, and problem-solving within themselves and with their peers.
"Ice Cream Shop"
New dramatic play themes every month.
Sensory Play
Sensory play is essential for a preschooler's development. As children actively use their senses in conjunction with one another, they help build pathways between nerves within their brains.
Sensory play encourages creativity, fine motor skills, and has a calming effect. Playdough is offered every day.
Sensory Bins
New textures, tools, and materials every week.
Storytelling
There are multiple benefits for preschoolers when effective storytelling is used.
Process Art
Children are encouraged to take a journey to creation. They are provided with paint, glue, scissors, paper, and everything a child needs to create their own art, in their own way.
As the children make discoveries the teacher gives positive feedback and guides the child with "I wonder" questions to help spark new ideas.
Art Materials
All day access to open-ended materials.

"Teacher Chrissy is a quiet and observant teacher. She fills her classroom with love and positivity and gets to know each child so well by watching their interactions. One interaction I will forever remember with Teacher Chrissy was during COVID when we had preschool via Zoom. She had a one-on-one time scheduled with my son and she had prepared her house space into a race track with all of my son's favorite cars. They spent their time together racing cars and talking about the results. My child felt valued and seen during such a hard time when face to face interactions were limited."

"Teacher Chrissy continues to be the gold standard that every teacher is compared to for my son. He was very nervous when he started preschool but because of the environment that Chrissy provided he quickly grew to love it. He once turned down a trip to Legoland to go to preschool. I could not have asked for a better introduction to school or a better teacher. I will always be grateful for the love and kindness that she extended to my entire family."

Parent Testimonials
"Teacher Chrissy is magical! My son’s in-person year with her was unfortunately cut short due to COVID, however, that did not stop her from continuing to be a fantastic teacher to my child. She carried on with the preschool magic over zoom and provided an amazing curriculum that kept my four-year-old engaged and learning through quarantine. Three years later, my now seven-year-old still talks about his beloved teacher Chrissy, and the magic box song (if you know, you know) is a classic in our house."
-Aliana
"My daughter had a rough start to preschool with separation anxiety and lots of tears. Teacher Chrissy held space for her, she validated her emotions while encouraging her to be brave and try new things. As a mom, I felt comfortable leaving my crying child with her. She is a wonderful loving teacher and we feel so lucky to have had her!"
"Teacher Chrissy takes the time to get to know and love every single one of her students. At preschool you would often find her on the floor wrestling, doing yoga, or playing in the mud with the kids."

Core Values Based on Research
Relationship-Based LEarning Builds Trust
Children’s developmental trajectory is critically mediated
by appropriate, affective relationships with loving
and consistent caregivers as they relate to children
through play.
*NAEYC
Play is the foundation for learning
When play is allowed to
be child-driven, children practice decision-making skills,
move at their own pace, discover their own areas of
interest, and ultimately engage fully in the passions they
wish to pursue.

Social-Emotional Learning
Understanding how to appropriately express your emotions and empathize with others has been associated with later success in life. Children learn new emotional vocabulary every day through games, stories, and songs.
Using my knowledge in Child Life sciences, I teach coping strategies to help children navigate big emotions and tough situations.
Social-Emotional
Topic examples: How to be kind, what it means to feel jealousy, how death is a part of life.
